When buying a gazebo, it is important to weigh various factors including aesthetic appeal, the materials on offer, cost, durability, necessary size and intended function. Understanding how to choose a gazebo that fulfils your requirements will ensure it becomes a valuable and attractive feature in your garden or patio space.
What is a gazebo?
Gazebos are wonderful outdoor freestanding structures that you will find in gardens, parks and patio areas. Often used to provide a shaded area, there are many types of gazebos available with gazebo materials including wood, metal and fabric. Each material brings a different aesthetic appeal, which one you choose depends on your personal preferences.
Gazebo design options
A part of the styling and gazebo design could be the shape, we have hexagonal (6-sided), octagonal (8-sided), rectangular and square-shaped gazebos to buy.
Another gazebo design variation is the sides. Many people think, and some online definitions say, that gazebos are open-sided, but they can also be fully enclosed and partially sided.
Over the centuries, various styles have evolved with popular gazebo styles being Asian-inspired, belvedere, cabana, grill gazebo, pergola-style, pop-up gazebo, rotunda, traditional pavilions, Tudor and Victorian.

Key factors to consider when buying a gazebo
Detailed below are seven essential factors to consider when buying a gazebo. Read this section of our gazebo buying guide to maximise your chances of buying the best gazebo to meet your needs.
Factor 1: Gazebo size guide
The first decision is which size to buy, it is essential to get this decision right. You need to buy a gazebo, that perfectly fits your available space. But how big are gazebos? We go on to discuss.
How much garden space is available?
To calculate the available garden space for a gazebo, start by measuring the length and width of the area using a tape measure, ensuring it is free from any obstructions such as trees or other garden buildings.
Consider the need for extra space around the gazebo for maintenance and accessibility, which might include leaving room for doors to open or accommodating outdoor furniture. Knowing the exact dimensions of your garden helps in selecting a gazebo that fits perfectly without overwhelming the space, ensuring it complements your garden's layout and usage needs.

Seating capacity
It is often the seating capacity which is a determining factor in buying a gazebo. Always try to estimate the seating number for a maximum event you might hold. Click on any of these links to find our gazebos sorted by seating capacity - 10 seater, 15 seater, 19 seater, 22 seater and 27 seater models.

Choosing the best location
When choosing a gazebo, it is important to place it in its best location. Consider both sun exposure and the natural flow of your garden. Choose a level spot (levelling the base if you need to) that provides a scenic view as well as privacy. Ensure the gazebo location is accessible for family and friends and offers adequate space for installation and around the edges for maintenance.
How big are gazebos?
This is a little like asking “How long is a piece of string?” Gazebo dimensions are available in sizes from small to huge, with our range starting at 6’x6’ and are available up to a spacious 20’x17’. We provide even larger if you buy one of our wooden log cabins from Palmako, which have an integrated gazebo, these are available up to 30’x13’.
What are the most popular gazebo sizes?
The most popular gazebo sizes typically range from 10'x10' to 12'x12', with other popular sizes we sell including 13’x12’, 15’x13’ and 20’x15’. Any of these gazebo dimensions are well-suited for both private gardens and larger public settings. These gazebo sizes are large enough to accommodate garden furniture and enable comfortable movement around the gazebo.

Top Tip: Check the precise measurements in the specification
Gazebo measurements
Gazebo measurements are often generalised on product labels and websites. The final product may vary due to their distinctive shapes. It is important to verify the exact specifications of your chosen gazebo before you buy through reading the gazebo specification. Additionally, consider overhanging roofs and other garden features that might impact your measurements. Our customer service is always available to offer free advice on all aspects of this gazebo size guide and what to look for when buying a gazebo.

Wooden gazebos
A classic timeless choice, wooden gazebos blend seamlessly with natural garden surroundings. Wood is sturdy and acts as an attractive focal point. Most often the gazebo treatment is pressure treated, but they can also be supplied dip treated or untreated. Although potentially long-lasting, wooden gazebos are prone to rot, decay, and insect attacks, which means you need to buy either a pressure treated gazebo or apply gazebo treatment through wood preservative annually.
A popular aesthetic choice, wooden gazebos are most often classified as traditional or perhaps even rustic. Our wooden gazebos are manufactured by leading manufacturers in:
- Forest Garden – the entire range is pressure treated for ultimate gazebo protection and is supplied with a fifteen year guarantee
- Palmako – our Palmako gazebos feature sturdy tongue and groove construction and are guaranteed for five years, although they are supplied untreated
- Shire – we have one gazebo model from Shire, a 7’x6’ gazebo summer house hybrid model, which also has a 10 year guarantee

Polycarbonate Gazebos
Polycarbonate gazebos complement a modern garden theme and offer a durable high-quality garden shelter. Frames vary but are most frequently aluminium. The polycarbonate panels provide a tough exterior, which is weather-resistant with some models having extra UV rays’ protection. The panels are also much lighter and safer than glass. The transparency of the material, is excellent for outdoor visibility (better than wood!)
Designed for permanent and long-term outdoor use, the transparent panels enable natural sunlight to penetrate inside, in doing so they create a bright and welcoming environment. Enjoy low maintenance, with no annual retreatment needs and no yellowing over time, all that is needed is an occasional wipe down.
Our polycarbonate gazebos are manufactured by leading manufacturers in Palram Canopia.

Metal-framed Fabric Gazebos
Choose metal-framed fabric gazebos as an affordable and flexible option to provide covered outdoor space. These structures are usually manufactured from a lightweight aluminium or steel frame, which provides a sturdy durable exterior structure. Roofing materials vary with PVC being a hard-wearing weather resistant choice, which is also waterproof and fire retardant. Polyester is a cheaper hardwearing alternative. Both roofing materials are available in various colours and patterns to match outdoor décor schemes.
The fabric of these gazebos is replaceable, bring changes in gazebo design and easy refreshes. Metal-framed gazebos are more likely to be seasonal in use (than wooden or polycarbonate) and it is feasible to store them away in winter months. Our metal-framed fabric gazebos are manufactured by leading manufacturers in Garden Must Haves. Available in sizes from 6’x6’ up to 13’x13’ receive a one year guarantee on the entire range.

Pop-up (temporary) gazebos
If you are looking to buy a gazebo for temporary use, one that is quick to erect and take down, consider purchasing a pop-up gazebo. Buy Fencing Direct offer two models, each measuring 13'x13', a mid-range gazebo size. Pop-up gazebo features largely focus on ease of assembly and disassembly, with just a few minutes needed, yet they remain as stable as any fixed structure!
How to approach a gazebo comparison exercise
Now we have discussed all the gazebo materials it is a good idea to discuss how to complete a standard gazebo comparison. Summarising each:
- Metal-framed fabric gazebos - are a cost-effective and flexible option, which are ideal for seasonal use due to their ease of assembly and disassembly
- Polycarbonate gazebos - are durable and provide excellent weather resistance, they are more suitable for year-round use in a variety of climates
- Wooden gazebos - provide a traditional look and can be customised with stains and paints, but require more maintenance compared to metal or polycarbonate gazebos
When comparing gazebos, consider both the material and the gazebo design to find the best fit for your landscape as well as usage needs. Always consider the longevity, the maintenance requirements and the cost of a gazebo against your specific usage needs. There is no one way of how to choose a gazebo, it is about selecting the best gazebo for both value, aesthetic appeal, and functionality.

Gazebo Factor 7: What is the cost of a gazebo?
The cost of buying and installing a gazebo in the UK varies widely based on several factors, including the gazebo size, gazebo materials and whether the installation is DIY or professionally completed.
For basic models, prices start at up to £1,500, while more durable gazebos cost between £1,500 and £6,000. Premium, larger gazebos easily exceed £6,000. If opting to install the gazebo yourself, the primary expense may be the tools required, which cost generally between £50 and £100. However, hiring a professional tradesperson can cost approximately £25 per hour, leading to total installation fees from £50 for simpler projects to £600 for more the best gazebo models, which are more complex.
Additional costs include gazebo accessories like curtains or screens, with prices on our website ranging from £100 to £400, and lighting options which typically cost between £80 and £400. Garden furniture could add a minimum of £200 to your expenses. For those requiring a sturdier base, investments in concrete, wooden or composite flooring start at an additional £400.
Lastly, the cost of building permits and planning permission also influence the overall cost of a gazebo. Planning fees can start from £80, depending on local authority regulations and the complexity of the installation, although many gazebo projects may not require a planning application.
Our final gazebo tip concerns selecting the appropriate base. Temporary gazebos made of aluminium and fabric may not need a base and can be secured using an anchor kit, but always verify this with the manufacturer's recommendations.
A gazebo installation necessitates a smooth and stable level surface to prevent any shifting that could compromise the structure's integrity.
Even gazebos that come with a wooden floor must be assembled on a solid, level base. If you are using a pre-existing surface like a patio or deck, make sure it is even and stable before setting up your gazebo.
Gazebos should be positioned on level surfaces that either match the shape of the gazebo or are sufficiently large, such as round, square or rectangular areas, to support the entire structure. Preparing for base installation involves clearing the area of any dirt, stones or tree roots.
While Buy Fencing Direct offers a gazebo installation service for certain models, please note that this service does not include base installation.

Concrete
Concrete is the best material for creating a gazebo base though it can be the most expensive.
Concrete slabs are the next best alternative. The slabs should be laid in such a way to form a continuous base with no large gaps between each slab.
Both of these options should ideally sit on a good dressing of sharp sand and hardcore to allow for adequate drainage of rainwater.

Wooden
In the case of a gazebo that already has flooring, a wooden base might simply consist of pressure-treated floor bearers or it may be a whole deck.
For open-sided gazebos with just a roof and supporting columns, the wooden base acts as a floor.

Gazebos with Anchor Kits
Many of our gazebos come with their own anchor kits, allowing you to secure the supporting columns to your chosen base. Check the gazebo’s detailed specification to see where this applies.
Gazebo FAQs
Listed below are some of the most popular gazebo FAQs that we receive.
What about gazebo protection and gazebo treatment?
In our section – “Different types of gazebos – by material,” we covered wooden gazebos, polycarbonate greenhouses and metal-framed fabric gazebos. The type of gazebo protection and gazebo treatment provided will vary according to which of the gazebo types you buy.
Common maintenance checks
Complete the following checks, irrespective of the material type:
- Joint and fastener maintenance
- Pest control checks
- Regular inspections
Wooden gazebo protection
Wood is exceptionally durable but does need protection. If you buy pressure treated wood (as described earlier) you will eliminate the need for annual maintenance. If you buy a gazebo, manufactured from untreated wood or dip treated wood, this will require annual retreatment with a wood preservative.
Polycarbonate gazebo protection
Cleaning is the main protection for polycarbonate, simply use a non-chemical solution with a soft cloth to remove dirt and grime accumulation, which can scratch the surface and impair visibility through the panels. Adding a UV-resistant spray to the polycarbonate panels is an excellent idea to prevent discolouration and brittleness.
Metal-framed fabric gazebo treatment
Use rust inhibitor products as well as coatings which resist rust to protect against corrosion. In terms of fabric, these need to be cleaned regularly to prevent mould and mildew which develops if left untreated.
What are the most popular gazebo styles?
We are frequently asked about gazebo styles. We have already mentioned roofing styles previously, which are an important factor.
There are many popular gazebo styles available, most of which we sell here at Buy Fencing Direct. A dozen of the most popular gazebo styles are Asian-inspired, Belvedere, Cabana, grill gazebo, pergola-style, pop-up, rotunda, traditional pavilion, Tudor and Victorian.
