Why choose large workshops?
It is easy to conclude that opting for a large workshop will leave you with limited garden space.
However, here are just a few of the benefits that come with owning a large workshop:
1) Robust
The British weather can be harsh. Strong framing and robust materials are crucial to your workshop's longevity and reliability. All our workshops use premium materials built to stand the test of time.
2) Security
If you are storing expensive equipment, a secure structure with lockable doors is important. Our large workshops have sturdy locking systems, granting security and peace of mind.
3) Ventilation
Good ventilation is not just a luxury; it is essential. Large spaces can still heat up quickly when using power tools, and this should be a consideration when building your workshop.
4) Versatility
Large workshops are versatile and well-suited for garden storage or home business hubs. Your large garden workshop is built to change with your interests. If you have recently taken an interest in health and fitness, why not transform your space into a home fitness centre and gym?
Large garden workshops - wood, plastic or metal
We understand that requirements vary - we offer large garden workshops manufactured with the following materials:
- Metal workshops - if you are looking for a secure and durable workshop that requires little maintenance, metal workshops are for you. These structures are ideal for storing outdoor equipment while providing space for projects or hobbies
- Plastic workshops - practical, lightweight, low-maintenance plastic workshops are a convenient and robust choice for customers seeking a long-lasting storage area or workspace
- Wooden workshops - have a classic and timeless aesthetic that will look right at home in any garden. Workshops are frequently used as luxury retreats during the summer months
- Fabric workshops - these are ideal for use as temporary, pop-up workshop facilities
Further information and advice about which material to choose is available in our blog post - How to Choose Between Metal, Plastic and Wooden Sheds
Typical features to expect
The following features are all available with our large garden workshops (these vary from model to model):
- Brands by material:
- Metal – Globel and Lotus
- Plastic – Keter and Palram Canopia
- Wooden – Forest Garden, Palmako and Shire
- Fabric – Lotus
- Cladding options – for our wooden large garden workshops, add insulation and reduce heat loss through cladding. Choose any of overlap, shiplap tongue & groove, standard tongue and groove cladding or interlocking logs for log cabin effect workshops
- Doors - large workshops benefit from spacious interiors and double doors that grant easy access. Double doors are great for adding or removing large items (note we have no single door models)
- Floor – large workshops need a heavy-duty floor. Options include:
- No floor – models like the Yardmaster 10’x17’ Metal Garage (2.97m x 5.22m) are supplied without a floor, and are expected to be placed on a concrete or paved base
- Pressure-treated solid timber floor
- Tongue and groove floor
- Wood polymer composite (WPC) floor
- Roof styles – the majority have apex roofs, but we also have a good range of reverse apex workshops and a few pent roof models
- Size – choose from 10’x8’ up to 10’x23’ – with the most popular sizes being 10’x8’ and 12’x8’
- Treatment – our wooden workshops are supplied pressure-treated, dip-treated or untreated. It is essential that wooden workshops are treated to protect against rot, mildew, pests and insect infestation
Garden workshop sheds hybrids
Enjoy the best of both worlds with workshop functionality and shed storage. Choose these as a great workshop, but also as a safe space for extra storage of items such as garden tools, lawnmowers, power tools and other garden equipment. We sell a wide selection of garden workshop sheds.
Here is a brief review of two of them:
1. Traditional 20’x10’ Deluxe Wooden Garage Workshop Shed
This large wooden garage workshop shed has 20’x10’ of space for storage and workshop use. Built with high-quality timber, it is durable and has a classic look that will fit in with any garden. The shiplap cladding adds strength and weather resistance, so it is perfect for year-round use.
2. Asgard 10’x11’ Garrison Plus Police Preferred Metal Garden Workshop Shed
The Asgard Garrison Plus Workshop Shed is police preferred and has top-of-the-range security features. The galvanised steel build and 5-point locking system mean your valuables are safe. Plus, professional installation and a 10-year warranty give you peace of mind.
Built for big dreams and big projects
These are not just outdoor storage spaces; our workshops help you achieve your dream projects. Being inspired is one thing, but having the space to bring those ideas to life is rarely possible.
Our workshops are well-suited for heavy use and are perfect for workbenches and equipment, including larger power tools.
These spaces are not just for DIY and woodwork projects; they are ideal for creatives seeking space for art projects and designs. You can even use large workshops as a soundproof studio or practice space. The possibilities are endless!
At Buy Fencing Direct, we also stock fantastic accessories that allow you to get the most out of your garden structure. Whether you seek solar lighting kits or garden furniture, we have it all.
Do garden workshops require planning permission in the UK?
Garden workshops usually do not require planning permission in the UK, provided they meet certain conditions:
- The building is single-storey with a maximum eaves’ height of 2.5 metres
- The overall height does not exceed 4 metres for a dual-pitched roof or 3 metres for any other roof
- It is not placed in front of the principal elevation of your house
- It covers no more than 50% of the land around the original house
- It is not intended for residential accommodation
However, different rules apply if your property is in a conservation area, a listed building or a National Park. Always check with your local planning authority to confirm.
