What can I do in a workshop shed?

Workshops in sheds are hobby rooms or places where you can make gifts or repair items for friends and family. As soon as your venture becomes a profession (e.g. painting in an Art Studio, etc.), you may require planning permission to continue. Alternative non-commercial uses would include a craft room, study room, a home gym, or even to house a model railway.

If you like pottering around your garden, then timber workshops make your life easier. When an interest takes over your home, you need to branch out into a private space in your garden, and what better than garden workshop sheds for this purpose?

What is the difference between sheds and wooden workshops?

The difference between standard sheds and workshops is generally the size of the garden buildings and the facilities the buildings offer. A wooden shed is easy enough to identify; its timber-boarded walls, roof, and door are made with or without windows.

Garden sheds must be the nation's most iconic garden buildings. The answer is not entirely clear when delving deeper into what constitutes a shed or a workshop, especially when you throw wooden garden storage and accessories into the equation. Where is the line drawn? Usually, it is clarified by size, but not always.

Below, we outline the differences between features for these garden buildings, so you have a better idea of the right structure for your garden:

Flooring

Quality workshops require thicker, more robust heavy-duty floors than sheds. At least 12 mm thick is recommended to withstand heavy machinery and constant footfall.

Headroom

Workshops require more headroom, so you can stand up straight, whereas a shed can have a flat roof because it is designed for storage and not to accommodate a person.

Roof shape

A shed can have a roof of any design, apex, reverse apex or pent, while a workshop requires a reverse apex roof so the door can be on the broader side of the structure.

Size

Pay close attention to the size of the workshop you choose. A garden workshop typically starts at around 10ft x 6ft, offering more space and sturdier construction than standard sheds. In contrast, garden sheds can range in size from compact 3ft x 3 ft models up to around 6ft x 6ft before they begin to offer workshop-level functionality.

Windows

If your garden building is going to be your place of work or a building you plan to spend time in, you need natural light. That means careful window placement as well as more windows and ventilation than a regular shed.

Ideas for wooden garden workshops

Workshops in the garden are great for teenage kids as they can be converted into homework dens and temporary sleepover structures in warm months. With the added benefit of more storage space, a garden workshop is an all-around winner.

Make your workshop even better with solar garden lighting and some decking. If your garden room is your home from home, treat yourself to new outdoor furniture or indulge the kids in a playhouse. Working in your garden has never been such fun!

Should the roof felt be applied once the timber workshop is fully built?

You add your workshop roof felt only when the garden workshop is fully built. Adding roof felt prematurely can lead to several issues, including alignment problems, damage to the roof and workshop structure during construction, and structural instability. This means that without the workshop frame to support the roofing felt, it might not be securely attached. The problem with premature installation is that the heavy roof can affect the overall construction process, and no one wants delays or wasted materials costs.

Can garden workshops be painted?

Most certainly, our garden workshops can be painted; in some circumstances, they are crying out for a splash of colour. Our garden workshops are generally pressure or dip treated to preserve the timber against decay, rot, and pest infestation. Sometimes though, it is not about the protective elements; it is about adding to your garden aesthetic and promoting joy in a building in which you may well spend all day. Adding aesthetic appeal and weather protection sounds like a successful recipe for adding longevity to your garden workshop.
