Garden shed base kits serve as the foundation for your shed, keeping it level and secure. They prevent movement and shifting, which can lead to misaligned doors and windows and compromised structural integrity. A well-constructed garden structure base raises your shed slightly above the ground, protecting it from moisture and dampness that can cause rot and decay.

Plastic shed foundation kits vs concrete bases

Two of the most popular shed bases are plastic and concrete, we discuss the merits of each below. Plastic shed foundation kits, for example, are lightweight, eco-friendly, and easy to install. They provide excellent drainage and ventilation to keep the shed floor free from water damage, dry, and rot-free.

Concrete bases, on the other hand, provide durability and strength, which makes the construction of a concrete base ideal for larger garden buildings like home offices, log cabins, workshops and garages. Optional French drain and anchor block accessories

Wooden bases

Another option is a wooden base. This is a supportive framework made from pressure-treated joists, that is designed to raise the shed off the ground and prevent direct contact with the soil.

The risks of grass as a shed foundation

With so many stages in shed building, one of the most problematic is building on grass. The minimum we recommend as a base is a timber frame (made from pressure-treated timber), filled with pea gravel, and sharp sand. Whilst not as good as a plastic or concrete base, this is better than directly placing it on grass, which we NEVER recommend.

Grass naturally absorbs and retains moisture, creating the perfect storm of issues when used as a shed's foundation. Soft and unstable ground leads to uneven settling, misaligned doors and structural instability. Damp conditions promote rot, pest infestations and poor drainage, all of which rapidly degrade the shed’s lifespan.

Building directly on grass is a recipe for frustration. Moisture will seep into the shed’s flooring, weakening the wood and inviting pests like ants, termites and wood beetles to settle in. Add poor drainage, and water will pool under your structure, accelerating decay. An uneven surface causes doors and windows to misalign, which will compromise functionality and aesthetics leaving you with a worse than useless outdoor storage unit.
