Shed Bases
Our plastic shed bases eliminate the hassle of laying slabs or creating a concrete shed base for your new garden shed. These grid system shed bases are quick and simple to build, require minimal DIY skills and take a fraction of the time it would normally take to lay paving slabs or concrete.
Shed bases are used to keep garden sheds stable, sturdy and raised slightly above the ground. They not only prevent the building from developing faults due to movement but also help to avoid water damage.

Garden shed bases are vital
Installing a solid and reliable shed or garden building base cannot be overstated, they cost money upfront but will save you money eventually. Your shed base is the unsung hero of workshop, potting shed or garage installations, providing the stability and support necessary to ensure your garden building stands the test of time. Without a proper base, your shed is vulnerable to many issues, including uneven floors, structural instability, and water damage.
Garden shed base kits serve as the foundation for your shed, keeping it level and secure. They prevent movement and shifting, which can lead to misaligned doors and windows and compromised structural integrity. A well-constructed garden structure base raises your shed slightly above the ground, protecting it from moisture and dampness that can cause rot and decay.
Plastic shed foundation kits vs concrete bases
Two of the most popular shed bases are plastic and concrete, we discuss the merits of each below. Plastic shed foundation kits, for example, are lightweight, eco-friendly, and easy to install. They provide excellent drainage and ventilation to keep the shed floor free from water damage, dry, and rot-free.
Concrete bases, on the other hand, provide durability and strength, which makes the construction of a concrete base ideal for larger garden buildings like home offices, log cabins, workshops and garages. These could be laying concrete paving slabs or poured concrete bases. Read our blog article How to Lay Paving Slabs for a Stable Concrete Shed Foundation for additional information.
Choosing the right shed base is essential for ensuring its longevity and functionality. Investing in a consistently high-quality base allows you to avoid costly repairs and replacements later. Whether you opt for a plastic grid shed base system or a traditional concrete base, the key is to ensure it is a level platform, sturdy and tailored to your shed's size and purpose.
ProBASE plastic shed bases
Here is a list of some popular sizes of our recycled plastic shed base product ranges, which are available to buy today.
These feature plastic grid systems, which will keep your garden building intact:
Optional French drain and anchor block accessories
To improve stability and protection even further, we also offer French drain kits and anchor blocks as optional accessories.
The French drain system helps divert surface water away from your base, reducing the risk of pooling and water damage.
Meanwhile, the anchor blocks are used to secure your garden building in place, helping to prevent shifting or movement over time, especially important for exposed or uneven locations.
These simple additions offer extra peace of mind and can significantly extend the life of your shed or cabin.
Wooden bases
Another option is a wooden base. This is a supportive framework made from pressure-treated joists, that is designed to raise the shed off the ground and prevent direct contact with the soil.
For selected sheds, this type of base is available to add from the accessories section (see the Forest 7’x5’ 4Life Overlap Pressure Treated Apex Wooden Shed). Here you can pay for an installation service for either a plastic shed base or wooden shed base as an optional extra.
The risks of grass as a shed foundation
With so many stages in shed building, one of the most problematic is building on grass. The minimum we recommend as a base is a timber frame (made from pressure-treated timber), filled with pea gravel, and sharp sand. Whilst not as good as a plastic or concrete base, this is better than directly placing it on grass, which we NEVER recommend.
Grass naturally absorbs and retains moisture, creating the perfect storm of issues when used as a shed's foundation. Soft and unstable ground leads to uneven settling, misaligned doors and structural instability. Damp conditions promote rot, pest infestations and poor drainage, all of which rapidly degrade the shed’s lifespan.
Building directly on grass is a recipe for frustration. Moisture will seep into the shed’s flooring, weakening the wood and inviting pests like ants, termites and wood beetles to settle in. Add poor drainage, and water will pool under your structure, accelerating decay. An uneven surface causes doors and windows to misalign, which will compromise functionality and aesthetics leaving you with a worse than useless outdoor storage unit.
